Dept. Of Judaic Studies: Towards a More Perfect Union, American Jews and American Democracy
Date: Monday, September 23, 2024
Time: 7pm-8:30pm
Location: Merten Hall 1201
Event Description: The Third Annual Distinguished Lecture in Judaic Studies at George Mason University with Aaron Dorfman, Executive Director of A More Perfect Union: The Jewish Partnership for Democracy
Jews have it better in America than anywhere else in the Jewish Diaspora in the last 2,000 years, success that’s primarily a function of this country’s long tradition of liberal democracy. America’s democratic norms and institutions — religious freedom, the rule of law, freedom of association, and others — have created an enabling environment in which Jewish life has thrived. But democracy doesn’t take care of itself, and in moments like this, when American democracy faces grave threats, the Jewish community — in all its ideological and denominational diversity — has an enlightened self-interest in protecting and strengthening it.
