Join the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Multicultural Education and Student Involvement for an evening with Rev. Jesse Jackson, founder and president of the Rainbow PUSH (People United to Save Humanity) Coalition.
Rev. Jackson is an ordained Baptist minister who has been active on the national political stage for decades, serving in the U.S. Congress, twice running for the Democratic nomination for president, and continuing his life’s work as a civil rights leader and activist who worked alongside Martin Luther King, Jr. in the 1960s.
Discussion topics planned for the evening include student election participation, challenges with voter registration, and an examination of the events and aftermath of the recent tragedy in Charlottesville, VA. A meet and greet opportunity is planned following the event.

George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government and the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce are presenting the second of three televised gubernatorial debates between Republican Ed Gillespie and Democrat Ralph Northam on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at Capital One Bank in McLean.
Schar School dean Mark J. Rozell, NBC4 Northern Virginia bureau chief Julie Carey and NBC4 anchor Aaron Gilchrist are the panelists. NBC’s political director and host of “Meet the Press” Chuck Todd will moderate. Each panelist will ask questions regarding issues concerning voters in the commonwealth and in Northern Virginia.
“Given the outsized power of Northern Virginia in statewide elections, this debate may be the most important forum of the campaign,” said Rozell. “It is the only time the candidates will face each other in the region, and they will be doing so before an audience of influential business community leaders while broadcast statewide. “
The debate is open to the public, but seating is limited. Doors open at 5 p.m. for check-in and close at 6:15 p.m. The debate is from 7-8 p.m.

Lieutenant Governor Candidate Forum May 23 at Mason’s Fairfax Campus
George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government, in partnership with the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce and Virginia Free, will present a special candidate forum featuring all six candidates running in the 2017 Lieutenant Gubernatorial race on Tuesday, May 23.
The forum will be moderated by Mark J. Rozell, Dean of Mason’s Schar School of Policy and Government (more info on the left).

Sanders gave Perriello a strong endorsement for VA Governor, directly addressing the “George Mason Patriots,” to, “in the deepest sense, live up to that title. I am asking you to love your country, love your state, [and] stand up for social, economic, racial, and environmental justice.”
Mason students and faculty took to North Plaza on Tuesday, January 31st to protest the recent executive order signed by President Trump that imposes a travel ban on immigrants from seven predominately Muslim countries and indefinitely suspends entry to the United States by refugees from Syria.
The event was organized by Mason’s Muslim Affairs Council, Students Against Israeli Apartheid (SAIA), Muslim Student Association, Mason DREAMers, and VA Student Power and included speakers from a variety of communities either directly impacted by the executive order or united in solidarity against the extreme actions taken by the new administration.
The diverse crowd was peaceful but firm in their opposition, chanting and raising signs with slogans such as “No Human is Illegal,” “Resist,” “No Ban, No Wall,” and “Immigrants are Welcome Here.”
According to organizers, the intent of the rally was to “Stand up and demand that George Mason and President Angel Cabrera works to end these racist, xenophobic and Islamophobic policies immediately!”
